Sunday’s pick six from Santa Anita Park includes a pair of downhill sprints and features a pick six carryover of more than $200k. The projected pool should exceed a cool million! The recent programs have been competitive, and the Sunday card is no exception. There is a 30% chance of AM showers with a high temperature of 68. Santa Anita Race 4 (OC-62.5/1x, 4up, 6.5T) Mott finally broke through with a win yesterday, and he has #5 Calimonco (12-1) in the opening leg of the pick six. Finished a close-up 3rd at this course/distance on Jan 9th, and there is plenty of pace in the paper race to set up his stretch kick. Gomez strings along. #6 Coronet of a Baron (5-1) receives a rider upgrade to Rosario, and the $550k purchase finished 3rd in the BC Juvenile Turf, so he can handle the weeds. Best around one turn and earned triple digit late pace figs in last three. #4 Red Sun (9-5) opted out of yesterday’s Grade 1 Kilroe in favor of this easier hillside spot. He’s 2 for 2 down the dip and should make presence felt throughout. Could easily make it four straight. #10 Guns On The Table (8-1) is graded placed on the downhill course. Working well for recently hot Garcia/Baffert team.
Santa Anita Race 5 (Clm-12.5/2L, 4up, 8.5f) #1 Country Tough (9-2) returns to a preferred synthetic route and reunites with winning pilot Gomez. Only two good efforts here, and he’ll be finishing at a hint of a price. #8 Marquet Rebel (4-1) hails from a cold barn, but he exits a fast race for the level and does well routing. #3 Phantom Strike (4-1) stretches out off the shelf for high % outfit (22% blinkers off), and he sports a bullet for this. Bejarano hops aboard as well.
Santa Anita Race 6 (MSW, 3yo fil, 6f) #1 She’s Here Now (4-1) might have been a tad short in local bow as she set the pace and weakened to 4th. Barn excels with 2nd timers, and the $170k Keeneland sales grad sports three solid local drills for this. #9 Misinjennuous (4-1) was necked as the heavy fav in Del Mar bow. Works solid enough for 1st start in 7+ months, and she has the 38% Bejarano/Sadler team in her corner. #11 Appealing Afare (3-1) rallied to finish a solid 2nd in local 7-2 bow. Garcia/Baffert on a roll together recently, and barn does fine work with 2nd timers.
Santa Anita Race 7 (Joe Hernandez, 4up, 6.5T) Pace should be honest with half the field boasting early-pressing credentials. #4 Gallant Son (12-1) hates synthetic ground, so toss his six plastic races and you’re left with five wins and a 2nd from seven outings. Placed in a local graded turf route on opening day under today’s jock Mike Smith, and he could finish full of run down the dip. #7 Dance With Gable (3-1) is 2 for 2 over the hillside course, and I liked his finishing kick stalking the pace last time. Projects a similar trip today. #1 Victor’s Cry (9-2) closed with a rush off the shelf at this course and distance last time. Continues to train forwardly and will be rolling from behind once again.
Santa Anita Race 8 (Clm-25/2L, 4up, 6f) Numerous suspect speedsters could set things up for a patient runner. #1 Stray Cat (5-1) is back in for a tag and switches surfaces for Headley. Broke maiden in a local Pro-Ride sprint, and he’ll be finishing under new pilot Mike Smith. Typically not a bullet worker, so you have to like the looks of his energetic local move on March 1st. #5 Kanan Dume (8-1) drops, switches surfaces, and turns back for the productive Espinoza/Mandella team. He can fire a fresh shot.
Santa Anita Race 9 (Mcl-25k, 4up, 6f) Headley seems primed for a productive day, and he sends over special weight dropper #10 Prarie Falcon (8-1) in the finale. Continues to impress in morning activity and should make presence felt throughout at this level. #4 Best Plan (8-1) finished an even 5th in much needed return. Bejarano is 2 for 2 with Marty Jones recently, and the 5yo gelding almost has to improve. #6 Delago (4-1) could not get out of his own way in a troubled extended sprint journey from post 11 last time. Dons the hood and deserves another chance.
