Black-Eyed Susan Day
- Updated: May 15, 2010
I had the privilege of spending Black-Eyed Susan Day at Pimlico Race Course with my mom and fiancee. We all had a great time and the weather cooperated as the thunderstorms did not hit until we got to our car and pulled out of the lot. Timing is everything!
We missed the first few races on the card but that was fine because the early highlight was the Lady Legends Race in the 4th. Congrats to jockey Gwen Jocson on her victory aboard Honor In Peace.
The 6th race was the first of five Stakes races (The Very One) on the afternoon and heavy favorite Starfish Bay just held on by a neck for Johnny V/Pletcher. She completed her five furlong turf journey in :56.56.
Sharp wire job tally for my MySpace Play of the Day Squabble in the 7th. Made a small win bet and off to the windows to cash.
Back to the lawn for the Jim McKay Turf Sprint and Central City goes all the way under Leparoux.
Vindy City just captured the Miss Preakness and now it is time to meet up with Eclipse Sportswire photographer Scott Serio. He also runs Stride Magazine and we are happy to have him as a partner at Horse Racing Nation.
Another turf sprint in the 10th and fav Phosphorescent keeps the early-pressing ball rolling.
We head down to the paddock to get some pics of the Skipat Stakes entrants. Five horses scratch so we are left with a six horse field. No value for betting but we have fun taking pics. For the record, even money New York invader Lights Off Annie won easily.
The Friday feature has arrived and we get a front row seat in the paddock. Dallas Stewart and Wayne Lukas walk right past us and my shutterbug sidekick is quick out of the blocks. Way to go Stacy! Time to play the special Susan-Preakness double.
Things did not go according to plan in the Black-Eyed Susan as Diva Delight clipped heels with C C’s Pal and dumped jockey Julien Leparoux. Unfortunately, my top choice Seeking The Title is right behind this incident and Kent Desormeaux goes flying in the air. Luckily, severe injuries are avoided and everyone will live to fight another day. Leparoux did go to the hospital but is expected to ride on Saturday. Acting Happy was in the hunt throughout and avoided all of the trouble behind in an upset win for Lezcano/Dutrow.
The get out race is the Hilltop Stakes and I love the chances of Joharmony. She cruises home as expected and I walk out showing a small profit. We had a blast at the races and now it’s time to eat…we’re starving!
I’ll be back to recap the Preakness Day festivities.
My Horse Racing Nation Plays of the Day for May 15 are the Shuvee Handicap from Belmont Park, the Jim Murray Handicap from Hollywood Park, and the Preakness Stakes from Pimlico.
My MySpace Play of the Day is the 4th race from Hollywood Park.
Today’s blog of the day- Talking Horses (Calvin will ride Pimlico differently than he rides Churchill)
