Beyond The Crown – August 17
The performance of the week was turned in by Sidney’s Candy in the Grade 2 La Jolla at Del Mar. The John Sadler trainee set blazing fast fractions, put away Macias, and kept on going in a visually impressive turf debut. He stopped the clock in a track record 1:39.67 and will probably remain on the grass for the foreseeable future.
I typically give my top ten members a mulligan, and Kentucky Derby hero Super Saver had his in the Preakness. The Pletcher trainee drops off the list after a disappointing effort in the Haskell. Ditto for Ice Box after flopping in the Belmont Stakes and Haskell. Fly Down threw in a clunker in the Jim Dandy and deserves another chance.
I will continue following the current crop of three-year-olds through the Breeders’ Cup in my Beyond The Crown series. Now that the Triple Crown is over I will open up my list to include more fillies, sprinters, turf horses, and late bloomers.
I will begin my 2011 Derby list in late summer/early fall. Speaking of next year’s Derby, Horse Racing Nation has built a Facebook page for top juvenile prospect Kantharos.
Horse Racing Nation has a Facebook page, and we also built pages for some of the 2010 Triple Crown series contenders. Click on the provided links below to view the aforementioned pages.

My Kentucky Derby top has redeemed himself nicely in the Preakness and Haskell - photo by Eclipse Sportswire
1. Lookin At Lucky (Smart Strike) – The Preakness hero is the clear leader of the 3yo pack following a decisive win in the Haskell. Got sick after his Monmouth win and will pass on the Travers.
2. Paddy O’Prado (El Prado) – Big wins in the Colonial Turf Cup and Virginia Derby. The Grade 1 Secretariat (Aug 21) is up next.
3. Sidney’s Candy (Candy Ride) – Ran out of his mind in the La Jolla. The rising turf star will probably target the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Facebook Page.
4. Trappe Shot (Tapit) – Solid runner-up effort in the Haskell. He could go next in the Aug 28 King’s Bishop or Travers.
5. Blind Luck (Pollard’s Vision) – The Kentucky Oaks queen got up late in the July 10 Delaware Oaks (G3). The G1 Alabama (Aug 21) is next.
6. Devil May Care (Malibu Moon) – Back-to-Back Grade 1 wins in the Mother Goose and Coaching Club American Oaks. A date with Blind Luck in the Alabama is looming.
7. First Dude (Stephen Got Even) – The Preakness runner-up, and Belmont/Haskell show finisher loves to hit the board and the gem of consistency remains eligible for an entry level spot. He’s pointing to the Travers.
8. Discreetly Mine (Mineshaft) – Impressive score in the G2 Amsterdam at Saratoga. He’s the one to beat in the G1 King’s Bishop on the Travers undercard.
9. Concord Point (Tapit) – Captured the Iowa Derby and West Virginia Derby in his last pair.
10. Fly Down (Mineshaft) – Belmont Stakes runner-up flopped in the Jim Dandy. He is expected to go next in the Travers.

Beyond The Crown – July 19
The performance of the week was turned in by Paddy O’Prado in the Grade 2 Virginia Derby. The Kentucky Derby show finisher has clearly relished a return to turf racing. He followed up a facile tally in the Colonial Turf Cup with another smashing performance over former top ten member Interactif on Saturday.
My friend Dee Leftwich wrote an article about the Virginia Derby on Horse Racing Illustrated, and he also took the picture below.
Colonial Turf Cup place finisher Workin For Hops is another talented turfer coming off wins in the Arlington Classic and American Derby. He goes for a sweep of the Mid-Atlantic Triple in the Secretariat.
Skipshot shocked overwhelming favorite Sidney’s Candy in the Grade 2 Swaps. The disappointing runner-up was caught on the line in his first start since finishing up the track in the Kentucky Derby.
A few sophomores have gone to the sidelines recently including Belmont Stakes winner Drosselmeyer and Mission Impazible.
I will continue following the current crop of three-year-olds through the Breeders’ Cup in my Beyond The Crown series. I will begin my 2011 Derby list in late summer/early fall.
Horse Racing Nation has a Facebook page, and we also built pages for some of the Triple Crown series contenders. Click on the provided links below to view the aforementioned pages.
1. Lookin At Lucky (Smart Strike) – The 2yo champ reaffirmed his position as the leader of the 3yo pack with a determined win in the Preakness. The Baffert runner had a small training setback recently but is back on target for the Aug 1 Haskell.
2. Fly Down (Mineshaft) – Impressive G2 Dwyer Stakes hero followed that effort with a solid place finish in the Belmont Stakes. The July 31 Jim Dandy might be next.
3. Trappe Shot (Tapit) – Passed his first two turn test with flying colors in the Long Branch Stakes. He will get the acid test in the Haskell.
4. Paddy O’Prado (El Prado) – Big wins in the Grade 2 Colonial Turf Cup and Virginia Derby.
5. Blind Luck (Pollard’s Vision) – Got back on the beam with a late-running win in the July 10 Delaware Oaks (G3). The Aug 21 Alabama (G1) is next on her dance card.
6. Super Saver (Maria’s Mon) – Derby hero has been training forwardly for his Haskell return. Facebook.
7. Afleet Express (Afleet Alex) – Pegasus (G3) hero goes next in the Jim Dandy.
8. Devil May Care (Malibu Moon) – The June 26 Mother Goose (G1) winner has her sights set on the July 24 Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) at the Spa.
9. Sidney’s Candy (Candy Ride) – Got caught on the line by Skipshot in Swaps return. He could be fitter for his next engagement. Facebook Page.
10. Concord Point (Tapit) – The Iowa Derby was his coming out party. The Baffert trainee could show up in the Haskell

2010 Delaware Handicap Day Recap
I have always enjoyed live racing at Delaware Park. Much has changed since my early forays to Delaware in the 80’s. Slot machines fill the plant and the simulcast theater is top notch. The giant TV’s can be seen from the parking lot, lol.
We spent much of the day in The Grove and around the beautiful outdoor paddock. We also sat in the comfortable outdoor seats overlooking the track and watched a few races from that location. Our original plan was to include a recap video but our battery was running low and we have to scrap that idea.
My full card analysis yielded a trio of chalky top choice winners (Brooks Star, Life At Ten, Sand Witchh). I finished the card with a bang, nailing back-to-back cold Exactas including my Life At Ten-Miss Singhsix video analysis of the Del ‘Cap.
John Velazquez pulled off a four-bagger including both Graded thoroughbred winners. Rosie Napravnik booted home a pair and Todd Pletcher saddled two winners on the afternoon.
In the 15th running of the R. M. M. Carpenter Jr. Memorial, Our Edge carved out the early splits but caved in the lane. Monmouth Park shipper Sir Whimsey rallied from 5th and last to take command in the lane and had plenty left in reserve to hold off my top Edgewater. Alan Garcia booted home the Steve Asmussen trainee.
The first Graded event of the afternoon was the Robert G. Dick Memorial (G3) for fillies and mares traveling a mile and three-eighths on the turf. Looking back I think my top pick Rcuandry was an oops! I thought she would be part of a tepid early pace but the Graham Motion trainee never got involved and was eased across the line. My strong second choice Treat Gently was the class of the field and was always traveling well under Johnny V. She tracked the pace and pounced on the leaders in the lane to post a 1-1/4 length victory for Bill Mott. A She’s Adorable edged controlling speed Ainamaa for runner-up honors and overbet favorite Gozzip Girl crossed the line in 4th.
The main event was the $750,000 Grade 2 Delaware Handicap and every handicapper in the country knew that Life At Ten held a significant pace advantage. Sure enough, when the latch sprung Life At Ten took command under Johnny V through splits of :24.98, :49.75, and 1:14.01. The talented miss basically won the race after the opening quarter and it was only a matter of the final margin of victory, which was a very comfortable three lengths.
Miss Singhsix looked second best on paper and rallied to complete my suggested cold Exacta. Funny Moon necked Milwaukee Appeal out of the show and was followed by Miss Match and Million Seller.
The Todd Pletcher trainee stopped the clock in 2:03.21 and is expected to make her next start in the ten furlong Grade 1 Personal Ensign at Saratoga on Aug 29.
The final race of the day was a Graded affair for Arabians, and undefeated Sand Witchh cruised to another easy win as expected. My cold Exacta with Frysk Me Now came to fruition as he was clearly second best.
Once again, I thoroughly enjoyed my on site coverage for Horse Racing Nation and am eagerly looking forward to my next assignment. It should also be an exciting summer here at the blog with Del Mar on the horizon. Check back early next week for my opening day pick six analysis, and my latest Beyond The Crown series blog will be posted on Monday.
That’s it for now. Good luck at the races, and did I mention that Del mar starts next week…yay!

Sunday (7-18-10) Hollywood Park Preview
I was hoping to post the closing day pick six but I fell behind after attending the races at Delaware Park on Saturday. I will be posting a Del ‘Cap Day recap blog shortly.
A 10-race card is on tap for Hollywood Park’s closing day. Three turf races are on the docket including the Grade 3 Sunset for long-winded sorts. Speed has been strong on turf recently and we shall see if that trend continues. I have included analysis of the 8th race below.
HOL 8 (Alw-1x, CA-bred 3up, 7f) #5 J P Jammer (3-1) appears to be rounding to top form in his 3rd race off the shelf. He exits a close-up 3rd in a similar local spot and projects a tactical journey under Martin Garcia. The Plays: #5 to win
Del Mar Schedule
Del Mar has always been my favorite meet of the year and this site kicked off during the ‘09 Del Mar season. I will try to cover the pick six as often as possible for the upcoming Del Mar meet. Check back next week for opening day pick six analysis.

Delaware Park full card analysis – Saturday (7-17-10)
By Jarrod Horak (horseracingnation.com, pick6blog.com)
Weather: Partly cloudy. High 91.
Best Bets (races 4, 7, 9, 10)
DEL Analysis – July 17
DEL 1 (Clm-30/2L, 3up, 5.5f) #3 CUT THE CORNER (6-1) dons the hood and switches surfaces for a 21% shipping barn. He could fall into the right tactical trip in his second tagged start. #2 Warrior Poet (5-2) earned a quality number in straight Maiden win at Oaklawn Feb 19. He flopped in route test when last seen March 13 and returns in a preferred sprint. THE PLAYS: #3 to win, Exacta Box 2-3
DEL 2 (Mcl-20k, 3up, 7.5T) #5 CHECKS CASHED (9-5) added blinkers and showed improved early interest in a clear place finish behind a runaway turf winner at Colonial Downs last time. He has solid connections in his corner and looms a prominent throughout factor in his 3rd start off the shelf. #2 Deuces Takem (7-5) drops to a new low in his 3rd start off a layoff and he rallied for the place at this course/distance May 29. THE PLAYS: Exacta 5-2
DEL 3 (Clm-5k, 3up, 6f) #8 YIELD SPREAD (8-1) gamely scored here May 3 and it’s been bounce city in two subsequent local sprints. Napravnik hops aboard and she is 67% with this barn recently. He’s a prominent throughout rebound threat. #3 Royal Stare (2-1) exits a romping course/distance tally and his new trainer (Autrey) is 21% first off the claim. #4 French Moon (8-1) brought solid Pimlico form to the table but had no answer in a stalk/fade journey behind a runaway winner here last time. Stidham is 20% first off the claim and better seems possible. THE PLAYS: #8 to win, Exacta 8/3-4, Exacta 4-8/3
DEL 4 (Mcl-20k, f&m 3up, 6f) #2 HOLY CAT (7-2) earned vastly improved pace figs off the shelf second time out and the top two were well clear of the rest. Hustling apprentice Sarah McGinn is 2-for-2 with this barn and a prominent throughout trip is likely. #3 Whodatkittycat (5-2) was clearly second best in local bow and Alfano is 25% with second time starters. Distant show finisher came back to score. THE PLAYS: #2 to win, Exacta Box 2-3
DEL 5 (Mcl-20k, 3up, 7.5T) #2 IRISH BLARNEY (5-1) beat today’s favorite #3 Sutter’s Fort (2-1) in his first start off the shelf June 12 and returned to bounce to the moon less than three weeks later. He switches barns and could rebound at a hint of a price. Sutter’s Fort has fired in both career turf starts and comes from the same connections as second race turf contender Deuces Takem. He sports a bullet for this and his sharp trainer is 22% blinkers on. #7 Royal Newman (6-1) ran into multiple next out winners in his last three and today’s shorter trip helps. #9 Epicurus (3-1) has never raced this low on the turf and the $340,000 Keeneland sales grad will almost certainly be overbet for Johnny V/Pletcher. THE PLAYS: #2 to win, Trifecta 2-7/2-3-7-9/2-3-7-9
DEL 6 (Clm-5k, 3up, 6f) #2 BROOKS STAR (2-1) is back at his claimed level for the deadly Napravnik/Vazquez team and figures in the hunt throughout. The surface switcher hails from a profitable 20% 2nd off the claim outfit. #3 Beyond Ready (3-1) is slowly rounding back to form for quality connections. He won three sprints here in 2008. #9 Tripplite (4-1) drops but is hardly the healthiest horse on the grounds. He has captured 3 of 5 conventional dirt sprints. THE PLAYS: #2 to win, Exacta 2/3-9
DEL 7 (Str-Alw, f&m 3up, 1mile-70ydsT) #8 SWEET ALLIE MARIE (5-1) has rattled off three straight including sharp turf route win at Colonial Downs June 8. She hails from a profitable, low profile barn (Peter Levine) and might get brave if able to shake loose early. #3 Entirely Honest (7-2) has been part of Trifecta in 7 of last 9 turf starts and should sit a nice ground saving trip behind the speed. She was necked from post 11 at this course/distance last time. THE PLAYS: #8 to win, Exacta Box 3-8
DEL 8 (R.R.M. Carpenter Jr. Mem. S., 3up, 8.5f) #3 EDGEWATER (3-1) owns fine early-pressing versatility and exits a sharp local route tally. Napravnik/Jenkins are 3-for-3 together recently. #1 Our Edge (8-5) got back on the beam at Monmouth June 26. He easily captured both local starts including Graded wire job last July. THE PLAYS: #3 to win, Exacta Box 1-3
DEL 9 (Clm-30k, 3up, 6f) #5 FLY SOUTH (3-1) finished a flat 5th in a local $50,000 sprint May 25. The 3-year-old gelding runs well fresh and Autrey is 22% with this type of layoff runner. He is 4-for-6 in dirt sprints and a tactical trip is anticipated. I was fond of this one at Louisiana Downs last summer. THE PLAYS: #5 to win
DEL 10 (Grade 3 R.G. Dick Mem. Hcp, 3up, 11T) #1 RCUANDRY (8-1) handles a marathon and received a perfect prep for this in a ten furlong turf affair at Belmont. A ground saving tactical trip for the 39% Rose/Motion team is anticipated. #8 Treat Gently (5-2) looked good in Sheepshead Bay and I liked her in that spot. She has a touch of class and seems perfectly spotted today. #2 Trensa (5-1) needed her last and always fires on the turf. She was necked in this event last year. #6 A She’s Adorable (7-2) has only flopped once and that was her lone marathon try. The consistent sort might be overbet at this distance. #5 Gozzip Girl (6-1) dumped her rider in lone 2010 outing and might not be fit enough for eleven furlongs. THE PLAYS: #1 to win, Trifecta 1-8/1-2-8/ALL
DEL 11 (Grade 2 Delaware Hcp, f&m 3up, 10f) #6 LIFE AT TEN (8-5) has rattled off five straight and looms the controlling speed in this event. She is not a need to lead type so Johnny V has options should another rival decide to get aggressive early. #2 Miss Singhsix (5-1) rallied to win the local prep for this and owns some impressive Late Pace Ratings. The sharp Wolfson trainee can be along to complete the Exacta. #1 Funny Moon (7-2) has done the bulk of her damage at Belmont and Life At Ten easily beat her last time. Note that she is a Grade 1 winner at this distance. #3 Milwaukee Appeal (2-1) has dropped eight straight and is winless on conventional dirt. I’ll try to beat the underlay. THE PLAYS: Exacta 6-2
DEL 12 (Grade 3 Arab Cup, Arabian 4up, 8.5f) #1A SAND WITCHH (2-5) has easily captured all six starts and figures ultra-tough as part of a three-pronged entry. #3 Frysk Me Now (15-1) won his sprint comeback and seemingly bounced as the favorite at a flat mile June 23. He won a couple of routes here last year and might rebound. THE PLAYS: Exacta 1-3
Double/Pick 3/Pick 4/Pick 5 contenders (in order of preference)
(1) 3-2
(2) 5-2
(3) 8-3-4
(4) 2-3

Hollywood Park Today – July 16
Thursday (7-15-10) Hollywood Park Recap
Early-pressing types best in a trio of Cushion Track sprints. Patient runners nabbed both 8.5f synthetic routes. Early-pressing types captured all three turf races carded.
Four bagger for Joel Rosario. Rafael Bejarano booted home a pair on the turf. Bob Baffert and Jack Carava both saddled two winners on the day.
I just missed the pick six again on Thursday. On Sunday, I missed the first leg by a nose and nailed the remaining five legs. It was deja vu all over again on Thursday. Once again, I missed the opening leg and proceeded to rattle off five straight. Guess I am getting warmed up for Del Mar!
Nice debut win by Bernardini 2yo filly A Z Warrior. The Zayat/Baffert runner turned back Indian Gracey and completed her five and one-half furlong journey in 1:04.14.

HOL 6 (Str-Alw, f&m 3up, 8T) #5 Sheeza Beast (5-2) owns an ascending Final Time Rating pattern and just missed when switched to the weeds last time. Mitchell is an impressive 33% with second grass starters and barn $$ rider Tyler Baze sticks with the 3rd off the shelf threat. #2 Westwood Pride (8-5) has fired big shots in all three turf tries and finished a head in front of my top last time. The Plays: #5 to win, Exacta 5-2

The razor sharp CA-bred goes for a hat trick and must be respected in her current form. #3 Folk Dancer (7-2) owns fine early-pressing speed and runs well fresh. Four-bagger for the red hot Joel Rosario.
Gotta Have Her overcame a slow start and rallied from 6th and last to prevail by a 1/2 length in the 13th running of the Grade 2 Royal Heroine Mile.

The aforementioned American Handicap is my Horse Racing Nation Play of the Day.
HOL 6 (OC-62.5/2x, 3up, 6.5f) #9 Hard Bill (8-1) has a nose for the wire and ran well off the shelf in his US bow. #6 Truest Legend (5-2) is 2-for-2 on synthetic and looms the target. The Plays: #9 to win, Quinella 9/4-6
HOL 9 (MSW, 2yo, 5T) #5 Robbie The Cat (7-2) debuts for the profitable Mandella barn and Bejarano takes the call. His dam has tossed a turf winner and the Santa Anita worktab looks solid. #8 American Wildcat (5-2) ran well in both synthetic sprints and is bred well enough for turf. Hat trick for Joel Rosario. Tyler Baze booted home a pair.
Isle of Giants cruised to another easy wire job tally and seems to have found his niche in synthetic routes.
Dotsy Jean popped the gate under Rosario and held on by a nose to steal the $60,000 Culver City Stakes for grassy filly and mare sprinters.
Saturday (7-3-10) Hollywood Park Preview
A 10-race card is on tap for Saturday with a pair of Graded turf races on the docket. First up is the Grade 2 Royal Heroine (4th race) for fillies and mares traveling a flat mile, and Gotta Have Her is the 8-5 favorite.
The Grade 1 American Oaks is the feature race of the day and morning line favorite Cozi Rosie has scratched. The versatile City To City is the new fav at 2-1. Partly cloudy skies are expected with a high temperature of 67.
