Beyond The Crown: Travers 2011 Preview

The Grade 1 Travers, to be run at Saratoga on Saturday, August 27, is shaping up as the race of the summer with Preakness hero Shackleford, Belmont Stakes winner Ruler On Ice, Haskell winner Coil, and Belmont runner-up and Jim Dandy hero Stay Thirsty.

Trainer Bob Baffert has not fully committed to the Travers with Coil and has mentioned the Pennsylvania Derby on Sept 24 as another option. His next Saratoga work will tell the story.

Early-pressing type Shackleford could go off favored in the Travers but Stay Thirsty might hold the advantage with a sharp graded stakes win over the track. Bill Mott’s late bloomer Raison d’Etat is an interesting longshot with pedigree power and a better than appears place finish in the paceless Curlin Stakes.

Uncle Mo

Uncle Mo is firing bullets for the King's Bishop - photo by Eclipse Sportswire

In addition to the Travers, the Grade 1 King’s Bishop is expected to mark the much anticipated return of Uncle Mo. The juvenile champ has been working steadily and has seemingly put his intestinal disorder behind him. The Factor is also attempting to resurface in the King’s Bishop, along with Caleb’s Posse, Flashpoint, and Justin Phillip.

Dreamy Kid is off my list after a disappointing 6th in the West Virginia Derby. Prayer For Relief, the winner of that heat, joins the top ten chase for Bob Baffert.

Speaking of Baffert, Jaycito flopped in his Del Mar comeback and is expected to have throat surgery to correct a breathing issue.

Finally, Buffum (103 BSF) looked good in a 7f entry level romp at the Spa on 8-7. Look for the Godolphin runner to resurface at Belmont.

Check out the top ranked Three-Year-Old Males on Horse Racing Nation.

Jarrod Horak’s Top Ten Three-Year-Olds

1. Coil (Point Given) – The G1 Haskell hero is currently at Saratoga but Baffert was not happy with his Aug 17 workout. His next work will determine whether he starts in the Travers or Pennsylvania Derby.

2. Stay Thirsty (Bernardini) – Belmont Stakes runner-up and Jim Dandy winner breezed an easy 4f in :51.98 at Saratoga on 8-14. Travers is next.

Shackleford

Shackleford is the possible Travers target - photo by Eclipse Sportswire

3. Shackleford (Forestry) – Preakness hero was a game 2nd in the Haskell. He worked 6f in 1:14.15 at Saratoga on 8-13 in advance of the Travers.

4. Ruler On Ice (Roman Ruler) – Belmont Stakes winner finished a solid 3rd in the Haskell and is expected to go next in the Travers. He fired a 5f bullet in :58.80 at Monmouth on 8-13.

5. Raison d’Etat (A.P. Indy) – Bill Mott’s promising colt finished a solid 2nd in Saratoga’s Curlin Stakes on July 29. The Travers is next for the late bloomer. He traveled 5f in 1:01.23 at the Spa on 8-14.

6. Caleb’s Posse (Posse) – Impressive G2 Amsterdam winner goes next in the G1 King’s Bishop on the Travers undercard. Breezed 4f in :48.58 at the Spa on 8-12.

7. Prayer For Relief (Jump Start) – Back-to-back graded route wins in the Iowa Derby and West Virginia Derby. The improving Baffert trainee is possible for the Travers if Coil passes on that spot.

8. Pants On Fire (Jump Start) – LA Derby and Pegasus winner finished a disappointing 5th in the Haskell. No published works since the Haskell with the PA Derby being mentioned as a possible goal.

9. Turbo Compressor (Halo’s Image) – Not sure how good he is after controlling tempo in Curlin Stakes but he has improved since Pletcher took over. Went 5f in 1:00.56 at Saratoga on Aug 14.

10. Smash (Smart Strike) – G2 Carry Back runner-up is back on the worktab, traveling 3f in :36.80 at Santa Anita on 8-17. I would like to see him try a route of ground at some point.

Beyond the Crown: Coil Strikes Back in Haskell

The Grade 1 Haskell was the deepest 3yo graded route of the summer with the Preakness and Belmont winners, and my number one ranked (since 6-29) 3yo Coil proved that his Swaps defeat was nothing more than a slight detour. He is indeed the top sophomore in the land following a game late running victory over Shackleford and Ruler On Ice in the Monmouth Park showcase on 7-31. He garnered a 96 BSF after a slow start and rallying finish in his first conventional dirt start and should continue to improve as we head into the fall.

Stay Thirsty

Travers is next for Stay Thirsty - photo by Eclipse Sportswire

At Saratoga on July 30, Belmont Stakes runner-up Stay Thirsty stomped a decent field in the Jim Dandy and earned a nice 106 BSF in his visually impressive triumph. It is on to Travers where he could square off against Coil.

In other 3yo stakes action, Turbo Compressor (101 BSF) went straight to the front and stole the 9f Curlin Stakes at the Spa on 7-29. Runner-up and top ten member Raison d’Etat is worth following for Bill Mott. He sat a wide stalking trip behind the slow fractions and was clearly second best in a strung out field of six.

Prime Cut was 3rd in the Curlin and Bold Warrior drops off the list following a last place finish. The latter will probably return to the sprint game after fading badly in the lane.

Speaking of sprinting, Caleb’s Posse (105 BSF) turned back in distance for Monday’s Grade 2 Amsterdam at Saratoga and rolled past a decent field (Justin Phillip, To Honor And Serve, Travelin Man, etc). He might come back in the Grade 1 King’s Bishop on Aug 27, a race that might also include The Factor and Uncle Mo. The summer action is heating up!

Check out the top ranked Three-Year-Old Males on Horse Racing Nation.

Jarrod Horak’s Top Ten Three-Year-Olds

1. Coil (Point Given) – I expected him to excel on dirt and he did not disappoint in the Haskell. He is currently stabled at Saratoga with an eye on the Travers.

2. Stay Thirsty (Bernardini) – Belmont Stakes runner-up proved that effort was for real with a stellar performance in the Jim Dandy. Pletcher and Repole have a serious Travers contender and his name is not Uncle Mo.

3. Shackleford (Forestry) – Coil ran down the game Preakness winner in the Haskell. Dale Romans is looking at either the Travers and Woodward at Saratoga for his next engagement.

4. Ruler On Ice (Roman Ruler) – Belmont Stakes winner finished a solid 3rd in the Haskell and is expected to go next in the Travers.

DreamyKid

The Aug 6 West VA Derby is next for Dreamy Kid - photo by Eclipse Sportswire

5. Dreamy Kid (Lemon Drop Kid) – G2 Swaps winner had that effort validated when Coil came back to capture the G1 Haskell. Neil Drysdale’s late developing colt is entered in the West Virginia Derby on 8-6.

6. Raison d’Etat (A.P. Indy) – Bill Mott’s promising colt finished a solid 2nd in Saratoga’s Curlin Stakes on July 29. The Travers is possible for the late bloomer.

7. Caleb’s Posse (Posse) – Won 2 of 7 stakes routes this year but relished a return to sprinting in Saratoga’s Amsterdam. Donnie Von Hemel has plenty of options for his versatile colt. The G1 King’s Bishop on 8-27 is a logical target.

8. Turbo Compressor (Halo’s Image) – Not sure how good he is after controlling tempo in Curlin Stakes but he has improved since Pletcher took over. Not sure where he goes next.

9. Pants On Fire (Jump Start) – LA Derby and Pegasus winner finished a disappointing 5th in the Haskell. His next start is undecided.

10. Smash (Smart Strike) – G2 Carry Back runner-up is back in SoCal and worked 4f in :47.80 at Del Mar on 7-21. I would like to see him try a route of ground at some point.

Beyond the Crown: Dreamy Kid Shocks Coil

My number one ranked three-year-old Coil was run down by 19-1 outsider Dreamy Kid in Saturday’s Grade 2 Swaps at Hollywood Park.

Dreamy Kid, trained by Neil Drysdale, is a late blooming son of Lemon Drop Kid, and the blinkers really seemed to help him focus. He earned a solid 96 BSF for his rallying Swaps score and could find himself in the top ten with another big performance.

Coil Bob Baffert

Coil retains top spot despite Swaps loss - photo by Eclipse Sportswire

Coil did everything but win on Saturday. He chased moderate fractions in the compact field and wanted to do more early. This was a typical synthetic race with a bunched up field going slow early and sprinting home. Bob Baffert’s talented son of Point Given will probably be much more effective on conventional dirt with his aggressive early-pressing running style.

Indiano uncorked a 108 BSF in the G2 Carry Back at Calder. He beat top ten member Smash but the latter was finishing nicely and was hardly disgraced in a solid place finish. Indiano flopped in the Derby Trial earlier this year and still needs to prove himself outside of Florida.

Switching surfaces, Willcox Inn (91 BSF) smartly captured the grassy G2 American Derby at Arlington Park on Saturday. He goes for a sweep of the Mid-America Triple in the G1 Secretariat on Aug 13.

Uncle Mo

Uncle Mo is back in Pletcher's barn - photo by Eclipse Sportswire

In other 3yo news, Uncle Mo has joined Todd Plecher’s barn at Saratoga. Look for him in the G1 King’s Bishop on 8-27 if everything goes according to plan.

Sway Away had a bone chip removed from his knee and is expected to resume training later this year.

To Honor And Serve breezed 5f in 1:00.70 at Belmont Park on 7-10. Saratoga’s G2 Amsterdam at 6.5 furlongs on Aug 1 is a possible return spot.

Check out the top ranked Three-Year-Old Males on Horse Racing Nation.

Jarrod Horak’s Top Ten Three-Year-Olds

1. Coil (Point Given) – Bob Baffert’s colt just missed in the G2 Swaps. I think he will excel on dirt and he figures to go next in the G2 Jim Dandy (7-30) or G1 Haskell (7-31).

2. Pants On Fire (Jump Start) – LA Derby winner bled in the Ky Derby. He returned to smartly capture the Pegasus on 6-18 and is probably headed to the Haskell.

Shackleford

Shackleford is back on worktab - photo by Eclipse Sportswire

3. Shackleford (Forestry) –Preakness winner ran out of gas in the Belmont Stakes. He is back in the Romans barn after a brief rest at WinStar Farm and his early-pressing speed should serve him well in the Haskell. Breezed 4f in :48.40 at Churchill on July 10.

4. Stay Thirsty (Bernardini) – Rebounded with a fine place finish in the Belmont Stakes and could get on a roll this summer for Pletcher/Repole. The Jim Dandy and August 27 Travers at Saratoga are on his radar screen. Breezed 5f in 1:00.66 at Belmont Park on 7-10.

5. Ruler On Ice (Roman Ruler) – Belmont Stakes winner received a 100 BSF for his surprise score and could go next in the Haskell. He returned to the worktab on 6-27, breezing 4f in :49.40 at Monmouth Park.

6. Alternation (Distorted Humor) – Peter Pan hero breezed 7f in 1:26.40 at Arlington Park on 7-9 and is expected to show up in Saratoga’s Jim Dandy this summer.

7. Raison d’Etat (A.P. Indy) – Bill Mott’s promising colt graduated in style at Belmont Park on June 18. Worked 4f in :50.02 at Saratoga (training track) on 7-8 and probably goes next in the Curlin Stakes at the Spa on 7-29.

8. Smash (Smart Strike) – Paired-up 103 BSF’s in two May sprints at Hollywood and landed the place in the Carry Back at Calder on 7-9. I would like to see him try a route of ground.

9. Astrology (A.P. Indy) - Threw in a rare clunker in the Iowa Derby. The Preakness show finisher worked 5f in 1:03.67 at Saratoga (training track) on 7-11 and is expected to go next in the Jim Dandy.

10. Bold Warrior (Bernardini) – Late blooming Allen Jerkens runner easily captured a 7f optional claimer at Belmont June 29. The promising colt is out of Hollywood Wildcat could make some noise at Saratoga this summer.

Beyond the Crown: Astrology Fizzles in Iowa Derby

Astrology seemed poised for a big second half of 2011 and the consistent son of A.P. Indy was heavily backed in the Iowa Derby. The Preakness show finisher sat a wide stalking trip and came up empty in a Prairie Meadows headscratcher. He is now winless in four starts this year.

Astrology’s loss was Bob Baffert’s gain as his late blooming colt Prayer For Relief (96 BSF) got the job done over Sherriff Cogburn.

Pants On Fire

Pants On Fire moves up my list - photo by Eclipse Sportswire

Pants On Fire reportedly bled in the Kentucky Derby. He recovered quickly and was training lights out so Kelly Breen opted to run him in Monmouth Park’s Pegasus (94 BSF) on June 18. The early-pressing type was in the hunt throughout and easily held off Concealed Identity in a perfect prep for the Haskell.

Bill Mott’s Raison d’Etat is well-bred colt to keep an eye on. The son of A.P. Indy, out of Juddmonte mare Sightseek, smartly graduated at Belmont on June 18 and earned a fine 95 BSF.

Sway Away got back on the beam in an optional claiming synthetic (Hollywood Park) sprint win on June 19. The King’s Bishop at Saratoga in late August could be a summer goal.

My disappointing Kentucky Derby top Soldat is supposed to go next in the July 16 Virginia Derby at Colonial Downs but has no published works since June 6 and drops out of the top ten.

Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom is out for the year - photo by Eclipse Sportswire

Derby winner and Preakness runner-up Animal Kingdom came out of his troubled Belmont Stakes run with an injured leg and was originally scheduled to return in the fall but is now out for the year.

Speaking of injuries, Florida Derby winner Dialed In is out of action with a knee chip.

To Honor And Serve is back on the worktab. He breezed 3f in :37.06 at Belmont Park on 6-26.

Other recent workers of note: Jaycito – 6f bullet in 1:12.80 at Hollywood on 6-25. Santiva – 4f in :48.40 at Churchill on 6-25.

This week’s marquee race for 3yo’s is the Grade 2 Dwyer from Belmont Park. A big effort from Adios Charlie, Cool Blue Red Hot, Dominus, or Tech Fall could land them in the top ten.

Check out the top ranked Three-Year-Old Males on Horse Racing Nation.

Jarrod Horak’s Top Ten Three-Year-Olds

1. Coil (Point Given) – Bob Baffert’s highly regarded colt stretched out successfully in the Affirmed Handicap (96 BSF) at Hollywood Park on 6-11. He could go next in the July 9 Swaps at Hollywood with the July 31 Haskell a possible target.

2. Pants On Fire (Jump Start) – LA Derby winner bled in the Ky Derby. He returned to smartly capture the Pegasus on 6-18 and is probably headed to the Haskell.

3. Shackleford (Forestry) –Preakness winner ran out of gas in the Belmont Stakes. He is back in the Romans barn after a brief rest at WinStar Farm and his early-pressing speed should serve him well in the Haskell.

4. Stay Thirsty (Bernardini) – Rebounded with a fine place finish in the Belmont Stakes and could get on a roll this summer for Pletcher/Repole. The July 30 Jim Dandy and August 27 Travers at Saratoga are on his radar screen. Breezed 4f in :50.33 at Belmont Park on 6-26.

5. Ruler On Ice (Roman Ruler) – Surprise Belmont Stakes winner received a 100 BSF for his score on Saturday. He returned to the worktab on 6-27, breezing 4f in :49.40 at Monmouth Park.

6. Alternation (Distorted Humor) – Peter Pan hero wisely skipped the Belmont Stakes. He breezed 5f in 1:00.80 at Arlington Park on 6-25 and is expected to show up in the Jim Dandy this summer.

7. Smash (Smart Strike) – Paired-up solid 103 BSF’s in his last two May sprint starts at Hollywood Park. Baffert trainee worked 4f in :47.60 on 6-21 and might try a route of ground next.

8. Raison d’Etat (A.P. Indy) – Bill Mott’s promising colt graduated in style at Belmont Park on June 18. Watch for him at Saratoga this summer.

9. Bold Warrior (Bernardini) – Late blooming Allen Jerkens runner easily captured a 7f optional claimer at Belmont June 29. The promising colt is out of Hollywood Wildcat could make some noise at Saratoga this summer.

10. Astrology (A.P. Indy) - Threw in a rare clunker in the Iowa Derby. The Preakness show finisher clings to the bottom of the list.

2012 Kentucky Derby Contender

Majestic City is undefeated in two starts and a stakes winner, so he’s unofficially the first 2012 Kentucky Derby Contender.

Kentucky Derby 2012

Churchill Downs - May 5, 2012

The chestnut colt, trained by Peter Miller, is out of City Zip so he may take to turf racing at some point. His aforementioned sire is responsible for turf stakes winners Get Serious, Unzip Me, and Workin For Hops. He also threw this year’s Arkansas Derby show finisher Dance City.

Dam sire Meadowlake has tossed the likes of Meadow Star and Meafara. The Carson City/Meadowlake cross has also produced stakes winners Little Miss Zip and Tishmeister, with City Zip the sire of both.

Majestic City’s dam It’schemistrybaby is out of a Pleasant Tap mare so he could get stamina from that branch of the family tree. His next scheduled start is the Grade 3 Hollywood Juvenile Championship on July 17.

Beyond the Crown: Watch out for Astrology

The Triple Crown series is over but my top ten list continues and the race for the three-year-old championship is very much up for grabs. This division lacks a clear leader and many more surprises are likely in store as we head into summer and fall.

Uncle Mo is still recovering from an intestinal disorder and Nehro is out with an ankle chip. Archarcharch is retired and Dialed In, Mucho Macho Man, and Santiva drop out of the top ten following disappointing Triple Crown series efforts.

Astrology

Astrology is ready for a big summer/fall campaign - photo by Eclipse Sportswire

Original top ten members Astrology and Stay Thirsty are doing well currently and late bloomer Coil appears poised to take on the big boys.

Astrology is relatively fresh and seems ready to make a big splash this summer and fall for Steve Asmussen. He got a late start this year but is no longer behind the eight ball and could ascend to the top of the heap in the near future.

Jarrod Horak’s Top Ten 3-Year-Old Males

1. Astrology (A.P. Indy) – Preakness show finisher has been playing catch up all year and could be poised for a giant second half of 2011. He has worked three times since the second jewel including a 6f bullet in 1:13.20 under the Twin Spires on 6-13.

2. Coil (Point Given) – Bob Baffert’s highly regarded colt stretched out successfully in the Affirmed Handicap (96 BSF) at Hollywood Park on 6-11. The July 31 Haskell has been mentioned as a possible target.

Animal Kingdom

Bad start cost Animal Kingdom all chance in Belmont Stakes - photo by Eclipse Sportswire

3. Animal Kingdom (Leroidesanimaux) – Derby hero and Preakness runner-up lost all chance after a terrible start in the Belmont Stakes. Look for him to show up in races like the Haskell and Travers later this summer.

4. Pants On Fire (Jump Start) – LA Derby winner finished 9th in Ky Derby. He recently drilled a strong 4f at Monmouth and is expected to go next in the June 18 Pegasus. The Haskell is his summer goal.

5. Soldat (War Front) – My disappointing Kentucky Derby top is heading back to the lawn. He breezed 4f in :49.45 (18/33) at Belmont Park on 6-6 and reportedly has an eye on the July 16 Virginia Derby at Colonial Downs.

6. Stay Thirsty (Bernardini) – Gotham hero flopped in Florida/Kentucky Derby. Rebounded with a fine place finish in the Belmont Stakes and could get on a roll this summer for Pletcher/Repole. The July 30 Jim Dandy and August 27 Travers at Saratoga are on his radar screen.

7. Ruler On Ice (Roman Ruler) – Surprise Belmont Stakes winner received a 100 BSF for his score on Saturday. Breen also conditions Pants On Fire so he has plenty of stakes options to choose from.

8. Shackleford (Forestry) –Preakness winner ran out of gas in the Belmont Stakes. His early-pressing speed should serve him well in the Haskell.

9. Alternation (Distorted Humor) – Peter Pan hero wisely skipped the Belmont Stakes. He could show up in the Jim Dandy and/or Travers at Saratoga this summer. Breezed 4f in :51.60 at Arlington Park on 6-14.

10. Smash (Smart Strike) – Paired-up solid 103 BSF’s in his last two May sprint starts at Hollywood Park. Baffert trainee worked 7f in 1:24.80 on 6-14 and might try a route of ground next.
