Hollywood Park Today – June 27
Saturday (6-26-10) Hollywood Park Recap
Horses showing tactical speed fared best on Cushion Track. Turf played fair.
Another hat trick for the red hot Joel Rosario. Tyler Baze and Joe Talamo both booted home a pair.
Turning Top patiently sat behind longshot Princess Taylor and gradually wore that rival down to pick up her first Graded tally in the Beverly Hills Handicap for grassy fillies and mares.
Sunday (6-27-10) Hollywood Park Preview
A 9-race program is on tap for Sunday. Four turf races are on the docket including three in the pick six sequence. The feature race is the Robert K. Kerlan Memorial Handicap for turf sprinters and the speedy Unzip Me takes on boys. Let’s handicap a couple of the pick six events…
HOL 6 (Clm-32k, 3up, 7f) #5 Forethreeforeuclid (3-1) drops back in for a tag and returns to preferred synthetic footing. Hot jock Rosario hops aboard the versatile sort. #4 Circle Drive (7-2) likes this oval and has been knocking on the door. I like the rider switch to Martin Garcia. The Plays: #5 to win, Quinella 4-5
HOL 9 (MSW, f&m 3up, 8T) #7 Not Here (5-2) finished a solid 2nd in her synthetic sprint bow and the impressive winner Rapport and show finisher both came back to score. She is bred to route on turf and does not meet much. #9 Kaysa Deeya (12-1) earned a competitive Final Time Rating in latest local turf route outing. She dons the hood, switches to Tyler Baze, and sports a six furlong bullet for this. The Plays: #7 to win, $1 Super High Five 7-9/6-7-9/5-6-7-9/1-5-7-9/ALL ($80)

Hollywood Park Today – June 26
Friday Night (6-25-10) Hollywood Park Recap
Early-pressing types (3 wire jobs) best on both surfaces.
Hat trick for Joel Rosario. Rafael Bejarano booted home a pair and Doug O’Neill saddled two winners.
Sidepocket Lou (4th race) had a troubled beginning and never got involved under a ten pound apprentice. He was claimed by the high percentage Bill Morey and can go better next time.

Saturday (6-26-10) Hollywood Park Preview
A 9-race program is on tap for Saturday and the pick six includes three grass events. The feature race is the Grade 3 Beverly Hills Handicap for fillies and mares traveling a mile and a sixteenth on the turf. The aforementioned Beverly Hills is my Horse Racing Nation Play of the Day.
The 6th race is my MySpace Play of the Day, and below is analysis of the 4th race from Hollywood Park…
HOL 4 (Clm-32k, 3yo, 8T) #2 Otto Von Voom (3-1) was beaten by subsequent G3 Wlll Rogers runner-up Bogie in an Optional Claiming event here May 19. The Jeff Mullins trainee captured his three previous flat mile turf starts in Arizona and projects a ground saving tactical trip under Tyler Baze. #3 Ministers Power (9-2) is back in for a tag after an even 4th vs. older state bred sprinters June 5. He looked good winning a Golden Gate flat mile turf claimer May 14 and the place finisher came back to score again. Bonde is enjoying a fine meet and he looms a prominent throughout threat. The Plays: #2 to win, Quinella 2-3, Trifecta 2-3/2-3-5-7/2-3-5-7
Horse Racing Nation Stakes Plays
In addition to the Beverly Hills, I have posted the following Stakes races on HRN…

Hollywood Park Today – June 25
You know the drill. Recap is on deck followed by a Friday night preview…
Wednesday (6-23-10) Hollywood Park Recap
Cushion Track played fair. Early runners nabbed both turf races.
Hat trick for Joel Rosario. Joe Talamo booted home a pair.
I covered the Wednesday carryover right here on the blog. I got one Primary and a pair of Secondary winners. I missed the 5th by a head and the 6th by less than a length. I was off the mark in the 7th.
Thursday (6-24-10) Hollywood Park Recap
A pair of 8.5f wire jobs on Cushion Track. A last to first route (8.5f) and a stalk and pounce sprint made up the two turf winners.
Two more wins for Joel Rosario.
Thursday’s 3rd race was my Horse Racing Nation Play of the Day, and I nailed the $6.20 winner (Talktoomuch) and the cold Exacta with overbet favorite Rule The Storm.
Friday Night Preview (6-25-10) Hollywood Park
Friday night’s 8-race card includes a pair of turf races. First post is 7:05PM PT and partly cloudy skies are expected with a high temperature of 68.

Beyond The Crown – June 23
The performance of the week was turned in by Paddy O’Prado in the Grade 2 Colonial Turf Cup. The Kentucky Derby show finisher graduated in the Grade 3 Palm Beach over the Gulfstream weeds and clearly enjoyed his turf return. He sat a ground saving tactical trip before switching out and making a decisive winning move under Kent Desormeaux.
Workin For Hops landed the place and speedy Monmouth shipper Two Notch Road finished 3rd. A few disappointed including Doubles Partner (4th), Dean’s Kitten (5th), and Kindergarden Kid (7th).
Afleet Express stretched out successfully in the Grade 3 Pegasus at Monmouth Park. The Jimmy Jerkens runner has won two straight and will probably take on the big guns in the Haskell.
Afleet Again rallied for the place and Soaring Empire completed the trifecta. Jackson Bend dueled with Schoolyard Dreams and both finished up the track.
Talented NY-bred Friend Or Foe beat decent sorts General Maximus and Ibboyee in the Mike Lee. He is expected to face open company in the July 31 Jim Dandy (G2).
Golden Itiz sat a nice tactical trip and wore down a game Skipshot in the Grade 3 Affirmed Handicap at Hollywood Park. The waters get deeper against the likes of Sidney’s Candy in the Grade 2 Swaps.
On the Hollywood weeds, Leroy’s Dynameaux edged post time favorite Bogie in the Grade 3 Will Rogers.
Comedero is a beast in sprints and the Arkansas-bred posted another facile tally in the Red Legend at Charles Town. It is time for the fleet son of Posse to face tougher foes and one logical spot is the Aug 28 King’s Bishop at the Spa.
Across the pond, Noble’s Promise finished a respectable 5th in the June 15 St. James’s Palace at Royal Ascot.

Holy Bull S. winner Winslow Homer returns in Saturday's Grade 3 Iowa Derby - photo by Eclipse Sportswire
Former top ten member Winslow Homer returns to action in Saturday’s Grade 3 Iowa Derby and a big effort could put him back on the 3-year-old map.
I have recently started a Blog of the Day feature, and today’s blog talks about handle decline and the rise of the racino. Final Turn – Rise of the Racino
I will continue following the current crop of three-year-olds through the Breeders’ Cup in my Beyond The Crown series. Now that the Triple Crown is over I will open up my list to include more fillies, sprinters, turf horses, and late bloomers.
I will begin my 2011 Derby list in late summer/early fall.
Horse Racing Nation has a Facebook page, and we also built pages for some of the Triple Crown series contenders. Click on the provided links below to view the aforementioned pages.
1. Lookin At Lucky (Smart Strike) – The 2yo champ reaffirmed his position as the leader of the 3yo pack with a determined win in the Preakness. The Baffert runner sped a half-mile in :47-2/5 at Santa Anita June 20.
2. Fly Down (Mineshaft) – Impressive G2 Dwyer Stakes hero followed that effort with a solid place finish in the Belmont Stakes. Recently worked four furlongs in :49-4/5 over the Oklahoma training track at Saratoga.
3. Sidney’s Candy (Candy Ride) – Chased a fast pace and threw in the towel in Kentucky Derby. The multiple Graded synthetic winner recently worked six furlongs (1:11.60) as he continues to prepare for the July 17 Swaps. Facebook Page.
4. Trappe Shot (Tapit) – The McLaughlin runner has coasted in his last three and was especially impressive on the Belmont Stakes undercard. The Long Branch (July 10) at Monmouth is his first route test.
5. Super Saver (Maria’s Mon) – Derby hero has resumed training and recently breezed four furlongs in :50.66 at Belmont Park. Facebook.

Paddy O'Prado scurries up the top ten list following a sharp win in the Grade 2 Colonial Turf Cup - photo by Eclipse Sportswire
6. Paddy O’Prado (El Prado) – Big win in the Grade 2 Colonial Turf Cup. The Dale Romans trainee will probably return to Colonial Downs for the Virginia Derby.
7. Ice Box (Pulpit) – He overheated and displaced his palate in the Test of Champions. The Ky Derby runner-up worked 4f in :49 and change at Saratoga June 21. Facebook Page.
8. First Dude (Stephen Got Even) – The Romans trainee was 2nd in the Preakness and 3rd in the Belmont. He is one of several pointing to the Travers.
9. Blind Luck (Pollard’s Vision) – The Kentucky Oaks queen got no pace help in Hollywood Oaks. The consistent, late-running Hollendorfer runner might go next in the July 10 Delaware Oaks (G3).
10. Afleet Express (Afleet Alex) – Has shown marked improvement since returning from a Feb-May layoff. He reportedly has his sights set on the Aug 1 Haskell (G1).
Honorable Mention
American Lion: Illinois Derby hero finished an okay 11th in Louisville. He drilled a four furlong bullet (:48.40) at Keeneland June 21. Facebook Page.
Devil May Care (Malibu Moon) – I have always liked the Pletcher trainee but thought the Derby was a bit ambitious. She goes next in the June 26 Mother Goose.
D’Funnybone (D’Wildcat) – Seven furlong specialist has the Aug 28 King’s Bishop at Saratoga as his main summer target.
Drosselmeyer (Distorted Humor) – Former top ten player won a slow renewal of the Belmont Stakes. The grinding type needs to run faster at shorter distances.
Golden Itiz (Tiznow) – The late blooming Ron Ellis trainee is headed to the July 17 Swaps (G2) following sharp win in the Affirmed Handicap (G3)

Hollywood Park Recap – June 20
I actually have a few days to recap from the week that was at Hollywood Park. Note that I will be covering the June 23 pick six carryover right here on the blog…
Friday Night (6-18-10) Hollywood Park Recap
Edge to stalking types on Cushion Track.
Tyler Baze and Martin Garcia both booted home a pair. Turf course played fair.
Get Funky (3rd race) has found his proper level in the $50,000 claiming turf sprint ranks. He smartly posted a stalk and pounce tally under Martin Garcia and is a serious threat if he comes back vs. similar.
Jack’s Wild (7th race) won for the first time since 2007 in an Optional Claiming state bred turf route. Danzing Tribal missed the place by a nose and a head in a much better effort.
Saturday (6-19-10) Hollywood Park Recap
A pair of 6.5 furlong Cushion Track wire jobs. Turf course seemed to play fair.
Hat trick for Alonso Quinonez. Tyler Baze booted home a pair, and Peter Eurton saddled two winners on the day.
Golden Itiz sat the right tactical trip and outfinished Skipshot and Alphie’s Bet in the 32nd running of the Grade 3 Affirmed Handicap.
Sunday (6-20-10) Hollywood Park Recap
Three Cushion Track wire jobs. Stalkers and closers best on the turf.
Joel Rosario and Joe Talamo both booted home a pair.
Leroy’s Dynameaux bested fellow late-runner and post time favorite Bogie by a neck in the 69th running of the Grade 3 Will Rogers for 3-year-old turf routers.
Nobody had all six, so the Wednesday pool gets a $136,973 head start. The Super High 5 carryover stands at $40,062.
Gotta get back in the groove on my Blog of the Day feature. Today’s blog talks about the Triple Crown runners and what they are up to presently – The Brock Talk: Triple Crown Runners Beginning to Roll Again.
Speaking of the Triple Crown, I will be back later this week with my latest Beyond the Crown blog.

2010 Colonial Turf Cup Day Recap
I thoroughly enjoyed covering the Colonial Turf Cup for Horse Racing Nation. The Colonial Downs staff was very accommodating and I would like to thank them for making our day a memorable experience. Horse racing is supposed to be fun and we had a blast on Saturday. It also didn’t hurt that we made a few dollars, and to that end here are my full card highlights…
CNL 6 Day Flight/Imponente Purse Exacta ($101.40)
CNL 7 Rockin Joe (best bet #1, $6.60), Exacta ($27.60), Trifecta ($66.40)
CNL 11 Hawser ($7.80), Exacta ($49.40)
Double (race 11-12, $15.80)
Pick 3 (10-12, $43.40)
Stakes Recap
Buckland Stakes – Lady Rizzi sat a decent outside tactical trip and gradually wore down Libor Lady. Alan Garcia rode the winner for Linda Rice. If Not For Lust rallied to miss by a head at 23-1 and aforementioned fav Libor Lady was another length back in 3rd.
Grade 3 All Along - We ran into Darrell Wood from the Media Department and he escorted us to the turf course to watch this Graded fair. From our ringside seats we got to see Edgar Prado give Shared Account a smart ride in a stalk and pounce one-length victory over a rallying Dynaslew. Tizaqueena carved out the splits and dead-heated for the show with Casablanca Smile. In my video recap I said Kent D rode Shared Account…sorry about that Edgar! Congrats to winning trainer Graham Motion.
Grade 2 Colonial Turf Cup – Once again we got an up close and personal view from the infield and my Monmouth buddy Two Notch Road took the early initiative with Workin For Hops in hot pursuit. Decisive winner Paddy O’Prado was always traveling well under Kent D (got it right this time, lol) and once he tipped off the rail the race was over in a blink. The Kentucky Derby show finisher was three-lengths to the good at the wire with Workin For Hops passing Two Notch Road for the place. The winning Dale Romans trainee is expected to return to Colonial Downs in July for the Virginia Derby.
That’s a wrap from Colonial Downs. My next scheduled live assignment for Horse Racing Nation is the Grade 2 $750,000 Delaware Handicap from Delaware Park. Wouldn’t you know that the Grade 2 Virginia Derby is scheduled for the same day. Can’t be in two places at once!

2010 Colonial Turf Cup Day Analysis
I provided on-site coverage of the 2010 Preakness Stakes week festivities for Horse Racing Nation, and my next live assignment is 2010 Colonial Turf Cup day at Colonial Downs on Saturday, June 18.
As part of my coverage I decided to provide free full card analysis for Colonial Downs, along with a video preview of the three Stakes races carded.
I will return Saturday night with a Colonial Turf Cup day recap blog complete with pics and another video.
Colonial Downs full card analysis – Saturday (6-19-10)
By Jarrod Horak (horseracingnation.com)
Weather: Mostly Sunny. High 91.
Best Bets (races 5, 7, 10)
CNL Analysis – June 19
CNL 1 (Clm-5/2L, 3up, 5.5f inner turf) #8 DUEL IN THE SUN (10-1) turns back after a troubled (rank early, checked) journey in a fast early/slow late local flat mile affair May 30. Hamilton Smith is 28% with second grass starters and barn $$ rider Franklin strings along. #3 McNamara (9-5) finished 3rd in the faster NW2L flat mile turf claimer May 30. He dons the hood for the 50% (6-for-12) Karamanos/Pino team and should make presence felt throughout at low odds. THE PLAYS: #8 to win, Exacta Box 3-8
CNL 2 (MSW, 3up, 5.5f inner turf) #1 IMPASSIONED (2-1) is out of a 31% debut turf outfit and Homeister is a sharp 20% grass rider. Dam has tossed four winners from as many starters and the rail post (42%) is deadly at this distance. #7 Studley (5-2) invades from Belmont and sports the best overall Pace Ratings. He’s probably the target under profitable turf jock Russell. THE PLAYS: #1 to win, Exacta 1-7
CNL 3 (Alw-1x, f&m 3up, 5.5f inner turf) #3 RUBY PEAK (4-1) was hardly a secret in her sharp debut and she came back to disappoint in first start vs. winners. The fresh miss is out of a profitable 27% first grass barn (Jenkins) and dam has tossed three turf winners. #2 Taking A Chance (5-2) breaks from the advantageous rail and finished a close-up 2nd in a local $50,000 turf Stakes sprint last summer. She makes her first start in more than six months and projects a ground saving tactical journey. #4 Limehouse Liz (5-2) earned above par Final Time Rating in dirt sprint bow at Pimlico. She projects a decent tactical trip and figures right there if able to handle grass. THE PLAYS: #3 to win, Exacta 3/2-4, Exacta 2-4/3
CNL 4 (Alw-1x, 3up, 5.5T) Let’s go right back to the 29% Camacho/Jenkins team and tab #1 EARLY STAR (6-1). The gelded son of Successful Appeal fired in both local dirt starts last year and switches surfaces for a sharp 2nd off the shelf outfit. He is working well for this and should move forward if able to handle the footing. #2 Redwood Fever (4-1) cuts back in distance for sharp New York connections and the winner from his last came back to score again. #9 Ennis (5-1) nabbed both of his 2010 starts including a Pimlico turf sprint May 22. His connections are easy to like and note that the place/show finishers from his last both came back to tally. THE PLAYS: #1 to win, Exacta 1/2-9, Exacta 2-9/1
CNL 5 (MSW, f&m 3up, 5.5f inner turf) #8 TOTOLOCHEE (6-1) hails from the recently hot Camacho/Ferris Allen team and showed marked improvement when switched to the sod at Pimlico May 22. #1 The Other Woman (10-1) is in from Hollywood Park and Garcia/O’Neill are 1-for-1 together at the current stand. The $82,000 Keeneland sales grad turns back after a pair of disappointing route tries. #2 Fugitive Angel (9-5) cuts back in distance and makes her first start in more than six months. Her rider is 24% on the sod and she removes the hood in hopes of relaxing early. THE PLAYS: #8 to win, Exacta 8/1-2, Exacta 1-2/8
CNL 6 (OC-32/2x, 3up, 10T) #1 IMPONENTE PURSE (4-1) flashed turf ability in Brazil last year. He adds blinkers/lasix for his profitable new barn and sports a couple of bullet works for his US bow. The promising import can compete here if ready to roll off the shelf. #6 Day Flight (15-1) tries turf for Camacho/Jenkins and might sneak away early in a race that came up light on pace. Dam has tossed a turf winner. #5 Complete Zen (8-1) exits a sharp course/distance tally and should sit another nice tactical trip for solid connections. THE PLAYS: #1 to win, Exacta Box 1-5-6
CNL 7 (Hcp-25k, 3up, 9.5T) #2 ROCKIN’ JOE (9-2) hails from the hot Mike Pino barn and Camacho is 3-for-5 with this outfit recently. I was fond of this one at Fair Grounds this winter and today’s distance seems perfect. He landed the place in both local turf outings. #9 Drivingmaxandmitzi (3-1) finished 2nd in a needed local effort May 29 and the show finisher came back to score. She won a similar course/distance event last June and her trainer is 30% 2nd off the shelf. #4 Kurbat (7-5) has been earning decent Final Time Ratings on the main and has won on the turf before. I find it interesting that the 6-year-old gelding has not raced on the turf since arriving in this country early last year. The low odds contender might be better on dirt at this point in his career. THE PLAYS: #2 to win, Exacta Box 2-9, Trifecta 2-9/2-4-9/ALL
CNL 8 (Buckland S., f&m 3up, 5.5T) #10 SUZZONA (4-1) ran into the red hot Starfish Bay at Pimlico May 14 and she was the beaten favorite behind a wire job winner here last time. The consistent mare projects a tactical journey under Vega. #3 Libor Lady (5-2) sports the best overall Pace Ratings and the seven-time turf sprint winner looms a serious prominent throughout threat. #5 Tripped (20-1) easily captured all three of her local turf sprint starts including NW3L claiming win June 2. Her connections are easy to like and she should have every chance to succeed from a tactical position. She obviously faces tougher and needs to step up her game but the price figures to be right. THE PLAYS: #10 to win, Exacta 10/2-5, Trifecta 3-10/ALL/5
CNL 9 (Grade 3 All Along, f&m 3up, 9T) #3 BLIND DATE (8-1) won the G3 Virginia Oaks at this course/distance last summer. She showed late interest in needed dirt sprint return at Pimlico April 3 and raced wide throughout from outside post in G3 Gallorette on the Preakness undercard. She makes her 3rd start of the year and could be ready to return to her sharp ’09 form. Her connections are easy to like and she figures to offer value. #4 Tizaqueena (2-1) is a multiple Stakes winner exiting a tempo controlling wire job tally in a Graded Polytrack affair. The versatile early-pressing type has a nose for the wire. #5 Shared Account (3-1) was beaten a head by Blind Date here last year and finished a close-up 4th in needed Gallorette return. She owns fine tactical speed and always fires on the turf. THE PLAYS: #3 to win, Exacta 3/4-5, Exacta 4-5/3

Paddy O'Prado returns to preferred turf footing in Saturday's Colonial Turf Cup - photo by Stacy Edwards
CNL 10 (Grade 2 Colonial Turf Cup, 3yo, 9.5T) #3 KINDERGARDEN KID (5-1) exits a slow early/fast late Optional claiming event at Belmont and he flew home in that good looking tally. The well-bred $500,000 Keeneland sales grad sports a bullet for this and appears to be sitting on a Graded win for Tagg. #5 Doubles Partner (5-2) is 3-for-3 on the sod and is an obvious stretch threat for Gomez/Pletcher. #1 Paddy O’Prado (9-5) is out of the Triple Crown series and the Ky Derby show finisher will take plenty of action here. He graduated in a Graded turf event at Gulfstream and owns running style versatility. #2 Workin For Hops (9-2) clearly has talent but might find this distance a bit out of his comfort zone. #6 Dean’s Kitten (8-1) flopped in the Derby but is much better on synthetic and turf. He has a good rivalry going with Paddy O’Prado and will offer much more value than that rival. #4 Vamos A Ver (20-1) has captured both of his turf starts this year and gets the acid test in this spot. #7 Two Notch Road (10-1) is 3-for-3 over the Monmouth weeds and has not picked up his feet at other venues. Look for him to attend the pace before throwing in the towel. THE PLAYS: #3 to win, Exacta Box 3-5, Trifecta 3/1-5/1-4-5-6
CNL 11 (Alw-1x, 3up, 8f inner turf) #8 HAWSER (5-1) earned an above par Final Time Rating in a troubled place finish here at ten furlongs May 29. He goes 3rd off the shelf and was necked in lone start at this distance. #4 Ham And Ernie (9-2) finished an even 4th in much needed Pimlico return May 15. The versatile gelding reunites with barn $$ rider Homeister. #3 Powder Mountain (7-2) stretches out 2nd off the shelf and owns a pair of wire job wins at a mile or longer. THE PLAYS: #8 to win, Exacta 8/3-4, Exacta 3-4/8
CNL 12 (MSW, 3up, 8f inner turf) #6 TUFTON (3-1) chased an above par pace before weakening in dirt sprint bow at Pimlico April 25. His sire is 17% first turf and dam has tossed a pair of grass winners. The 3-year-old gelding is yet another live contender for Camacho/Jenkens. #1 Pollards Vision (5-2) sprung to life in a close-up place finish at ten furlongs here last time. Homeister strings along and he is an obvious threat if able to duplicate his last. Comes up a tad short at this distance? THE PLAYS: #6 to win, Exacta 6-1, Trifecta 6/ALL/1
Double/Pick 3/Pick 4 contenders (in order of preference)

(2) 1-7

Hollywood Park Today – June 16
Sunday (6-13-10) Hollywood Park Recap
Cushion Track yielded three wire jobs, and a pair of 8.5f wire-to-wire winners in the four turf races carded.
Tyler Baze, Victor Espinoza, and Joel Rosario each booted home a pair.
I selected St Trinians in the G1 Vanity Handicap and thought she might hang on but along came Zenyatta to nail her late in a thrilling finish. What an exciting race and I was certainly not upset that the Shirreffs trainee ran her record to a perfect 17-for-17. St Trinians proved that she is for real and it was reported that she threw at shoe. The two talented ladies might meet again at Del Mar in the Clement Hirsch and let’s hope they put on another great show for the fans.
Wednesday (6-16-10) Hollywood Park Preview
An 8-race card is on tap June 16. Note that insufficient entries have caused the Thursday (6-17-10) Hollywood card to be scrapped. The Wednesday’s pick six includes a pair of turf races and below is a quick look at the sequence.
Race 3 – This straight Maiden route is my Today’s Racing Digest Play of the Day.
Race 4 – Seductionist is the solid 5-2 morning line favorite at the unusual 7.5f distance for Santiago Reyes/Kruljac.
Race 5 – First of two turf races in the sequence. Gotham Devil is the 5-2 fav for Eoin Harty. He is out of a 21% first grass sire and exits a sharp Cushion Track wire job Maiden Claiming route win. Eze Does It is a son of Afleet Alex and could improve around two turns. Dam has tossed a turf winner. Call Me Honcho stretches out and switches barns. The Unusual Heat gelding will be finishing under Rosario.
Race 6 – My Horse Racing Nation Play of the Day.
Race 7 – My MySpace Play of the Day.
Race 8 – Neighpom (Pomeroy) is out of a 15% debut Maiden claiming barn and Tyler Baze takes the call. Ribat owns win early sprint breeding and his cold trainer shows a profit with First Time Starters. Another pair of firsters (Curly Boy, Defamed) could also hit the ground running. The former hails from a productive jockey-trainer team and the latter shows a nice profit with debut runners.

Beyond The Crown – June 10
The performance of the week was turned in by Trappe Shot. His razor sharp Allowance win on the Belmont Stakes undercard earned him a 105 BSF. The promising son of Tapit has now won three straight in easy fashion and will try two turns next. Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin is expected to shoot for the Travers if things go well in his next engagement.
The Belmont Stakes was the marquee event of the week that was, and former Top Ten member Drosselmeyer is back in the spotlight after turning the tables on Fly Down in the Test of Champions. His even running style was perfectly suited to the marathon distance. Hats off to the winning connections of jockey Mike Smith, trainer Bill Mott, and WinStar Farm. Also, kudos to me for giving out the Belmont Exacta in my full card analysis…yes, lol!
My Belmont top Fly Down was hardly disgraced in his runner-up effort and he should continue to progress for Zito.
First Dude was able to change his energy distribution and slowed things down up front. He lost second late in a solid performance. His natural speed in his best weapon and he could make some noise this summer if able to run back to his sharp Preakness effort.

D’Funnybone is an extended sprint terror. He racked up another seven furlong Graded tally in the Woody Stephens but it should be noted that Trappe Shot ran faster at the same distance. The Grade 1 King’s Bishop is the main summer goal for the Rick Dutrow trainee.
Switch got the jump on Blind Luck at a speed friendly distance in the Grade 2 Hollywood Oaks. I have always been a big fan of the winner and played her in the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager. She did not make that event but is on the right track and appears to have a bright future. Blind Luck might be better on dirt and should get her chance to prove it at Saratoga this summer.
I have recently started a Blog of the Day feature, and today’s blog focuses on the petty arguments between Rachel and Zenyatta Fans…
That’s Amore Stable – Rachel, the Fleur de Lis, and, boy, there’s a lot of stupidity out there
I will continue following the current crop of three-year-olds through the Breeders’ Cup in my Beyond The Crown series. Now that the Triple Crown is over I will open up my list to include more fillies, sprinters, turf horses, and late bloomers.
I will begin my 2011 Derby list in late summer/early fall.
Horse Racing Nation has a new Facebook page, and we also built pages for some of the Triple Crown series contenders. Click on the provided links below to view the aforementioned pages.
1. Lookin At Lucky (Smart Strike) – The 2yo champ reaffirmed his position as the leader of the 3yo pack with a determined win in the Preakness. The Baffert runner is expected to show up in the Aug 1 Haskell.
2. Fly Down (Mineshaft) – Impressive G2 Dwyer Stakes hero followed that effort with a solid place finish in the Belmont Stakes. A possible summer race sequence could include the Jim Dandy and Travers at the Spa.
3. Sidney’s Candy (Candy Ride) – Chased a fast pace and threw in the towel in Kentucky Derby. The multiple Graded synthetic winner worked five furlongs (1:01.60) on June 7 as he continues to prepare for the July 17 Swaps. Facebook Page.
4. Trappe Shot (Tapit) – New top ten member shoots straight into the fab five. The McLaughlin runner has coasted in his last three and was especially impressive on the Belmont Stakes undercard. The Long Branch (July 10) at Monmouth is his first route test.
5. Super Saver (Maria’s Mon) – Derby hero has resumed light training with the Aug 28 Travers his summer goal. Facebook.
6. Ice Box (Pulpit) – He overheated and displaced his palate in the Test of Champions. The Ky Derby runner-up is expected to target the Travers. Facebook Page.
7. First Dude (Stephen Got Even) – The Romans trainee was 2nd in the Preakness and 3rd in the Belmont. He is one of several pointing to the Travers.
8. Blind Luck (Pollard’s Vision) – The Kentucky Oaks queen got no pace help in Hollywood Oaks. The consistent, late-running Hollendorfer runner will probably ship to the Spa this summer and her dirt ratings are better.
9. Paddy O’Prado (El Prado) – Third in the Derby and sixth in the Preakness. He will return to the grass in the June 19 Colonial Turf Cup.
10. Jackson Bend (Hear No Evil) – Bounced back from below par Derby effort with a solid show finish in the Preakness. How can you not like the overachieving Zito trainee?
Honorable Mention
American Lion: Finished an okay 11th in Louisville. Illinois Derby hero will probably get a breather before returning to the racing wars later this summer.
Noble’s Promise (Cuvee) – Recovered from his Arkansas Derby adventure to finish a fine 5th in Louisville. McPeek passed on the Preakness in favor of the St James Palace at Ascot on June 15.
