Santa Anita Pick 6 – Jan 14th

Thursday’s pick six from Santa Anita Park features a stakes quality allowance turf route. Grade 1 winner Monzante tries to rediscover past sharp form on the drop for Mike Mitchell, and he’ll have to run down Tres Borrachos to reach the winners’ circle. Sunny skies are expected a high temperature of 74. My suggested tickets can be found at the bottom of this post following analysis.

Pick 6 blog has been growing in popularity on a daily basis, and I would like to thank everyone for making this site a success. I will continue to feature the Southern California Pick 6, along with select carryovers from across the country.

Degree of Difficulty: Moderate. On a scale of 1 to 10, the Thursday pick six from Santa Anita rates a 5.

Possible Singles: Just Heat (3rd race), Yorktown (7th race), James Prior (8th race)

Jarrod Horak’s Santa Anita Pick 6 analysis – Thursday, January 14, 2010

Santa Anita Race 3 (Clm-12.5/2L, 4up, 8f) #3 Just Heat (8-5) is back at claimed level for Art Sherman. Switches surfaces and is a capable synthetic router. #2 Indy Ride (7-5) showed late interest in local extended sprint on Jan 2nd. Has never raced this low and broke maiden at this distance. #1 Chop House George (7-2) earned decent speed fig at 7.5f last time. Back around two turns and should be close to an expected tepid early pace.

Santa Anita Race 4 (Mcl-40k, 3yo fil, 5.5f) #1 Miss Seamless (7-2) is working in steady fashion for bow, and she could be a runner for profitable 20% Solis/Gallagher team. #8 This Time Baby (5-2) flees the rail and can go better 2nd off the shelf. Barn a profitable 22% second time lasix.

Santa Anita Race 5 (Alw-2x, f&m 4up, 8T) Turf rails at 30 feet, and an expected tepid early pace is expected. #6 Michael’s Rose (9-2) hails from a recently hot barn, and Talamo is 3 for 6 with Drysdale. Likes this course/distance, and she’s a major factor throughout. #3 Hameildaeme (2-1) runs well fresh, and Walsh is 26% with new additions. Won lone local outing and will be finishing under Gomez. Nice recent works.

Santa Anita Race 6 (Mcl-32k, 3yo fil, 6.5f) #6 Pocatello Wild Cat (5-1) showed signs of life from outside post in local extended sprint off the shelf on Dec 28th. Recently hot jock Mike Smith hops aboard. A trio of 2nd timers deserve consideration. #1 Kiss’em For Me (4-1) overcame slow start to rally for the show in local 5.5f bow. Trainer enjoying success at current stand, but he’s only 6% with 2nd timers. #3 Phoenician Star (5-1) took action and finished a respectable 2nd in across town bow. Rosario sticks. #4 Efficiency (7-2) broke poorly and finished 4th in same race Phoenician Star exits.

Santa Anita Race 7 (Alw-3x, 4up, 8T) #1 Yorktown (7-2) projects the first run trip. Experienced traffic woes behind promising Canani import Loup Breton last time. Rosario knows him now, and a big effort seems likely with clear sailing. I have always liked #2 Monzante (2-1), and the Mitchell trainee is capable of a huge last run when on his game. #4 Tres Borrachos (3-1) is the one to catch, but the Cushion Track specialist rarely fires away from Hollywood.

Santa Anita Race 8 (Clm-8k, 4up, 9f) #2 James Prior (5-2) goes 3rd off the shelf, and Santiago Reyes has booted him home twice. Cerin has won a couple recently, and this one should be part of a tepid early pace. #1 Orientation Hall (9-5) has two wins showing on the page, but both were at Fairplex. Has some early-pressing ability and stretches back out 2nd off the claim. Removes the hood and attracts Rosario. #8 Souvenir Slew (3-1) drops and lures Espinoza away from my 2nd choice. Has won here before, and note his nine trifecta finishes in ten synthetic tries.

I won the pick three that started with race two. If I had bet on the late pick four, I could have had it for six bucks. I had two horses in race 5, singled the next two legs and had three picks in the third leg. I originally had James Prior as a single pick in the eighth. I actually could have had the late pick four for 2 bucks. If i’d only bet it, I would have won another 200 or so. In the pick three I won, I spent 28 bucks for a return of 183. So I should have bet the pick six. I could have had it for 168 bucks, or 56 bucks if I had singled James Prior. The key was the second leg in which I took seven horses. Glad I did because a short race such as 5 1/2 furlongs can be unpredictable. Anyway, It was still great fun and as usual, the what-ifs are more wild and fantastic than the actual winning!
