Santa Anita Pick 6 – March 10th
Wednesday’s pick six from Santa Anita Park includes three grass races and a stakes quality synthetic sprint. In the latter event, Free Flying Soul, 3rd in the Grade 1 Santa Monica on Jan 31st, will try to hold off Sunshine Millions winner Quisisana. Partly cloudy and windy conditions are expected with a high temperature of 66. My suggested tickets can be found at the bottom of this post following analysis.

Santa Anita Race 3 (Clm-25k, 4up, 8T) #6 Mind The Minister (4-1) ran a better than expected 2nd in a local synthetic route last time. Both wins on turf and owns running style versatility. #3 Cavanal (5-2) lacks a winning spirit, but that seems to be the case with many of these. Consistent finisher owns the numbers to down this crew. #4 Nitro Active (9-2) drops to lowest level and hails from a sharp blinkers off outfit. Lone turf win at this flat mile distance. #1 Polonius (4-1) is a pace player at the very least, but the rail post (1 for 46) has been dreadful in flat mile turf races.
Santa Anita Race 4 (Alw-53k, f&m 4up, 6f) #5 Free Flying Soul (8-5) battled on pace and finished 3rd in a 7f grade one last time, and place finisher Proviso came back to beat the boys in the grassy Kilroe (G1). This is her fav oval, and class/speed a deadly combo, especially controlling pace at a speed friendly distance. Working well for this. #2 Quisisana (5-2) has never been better and will be tracking my top from the outset. She is 3 for 3 at this distance and goes for the hat trick today.
Santa Anita Race 5 (MSW, CA-bred 3up, 8T) #5 Excess Power (5-1) broke 10th and ended up an even 5th of 14 in local synthetic sprint bow. In Excess is a fine grass sire, and Rosario sticks with the improvement candidate. #3 Unusually Sound (5-2) rallied for the place from an outer post in local course/distance bow, and show finisher came back to score. Barn solid with 2nd timers, and the gelded son of Unusual Heat is a contender right back. #7 Bud I Crushed It (7-2) ran into the likes of subsequent graded winners Alphie’s Bet and Caracortado in his last pair. Barn excels with this type of layoff runner, and he looms a prominent throughout player. #8 Teafatiller (4-1) was nosed out of the show in same race Unusually Sound exits, and that was his first start since Dec ’08. Every right to move up today.
Santa Anita Race 6 (OC-80/1x, 3yo fil, 6f) #4 Pink Blossom (5-2) earned strong pace figs in 7f bow, and she did all of the dirty work in a dueling place finish in first start versus winners. Speed strong at this distance recently, and look out if she shakes loose early. #3 Haggai (4-1) exits a productive downhill stakes affair, and her best race was a sharp win in local synthetic bow. Has hot connections in her corner and should go better on surface switch 3rd off the shelf. #2 Hopeful Union (3-1) was a professional stalking winner at first asking and has plenty of upside. Barn does well with recent graduates trying winners for first time.
Santa Anita Race 7 (Clm-50k, 4up, 6.5T) #1 Ron Bob And Dave (9-2) owns fine early-pressing speed and has been part of exacta in all four downhill tries. Bejarano hops aboard as Talamo opts for returnee #2 Hewitts (6-1). The latter went all the way in a downhill sprint (Jan ’09) under today’s pilot, and he’s working well for this. #7 Noblety (7-2) is a must use because his tactical speed frequently puts him in a position to win, and note that he has tallied in 3 of last 4. Enjoys the hillside course.
Santa Anita Race 8 (Mcl-32k, 3yo fil, 8f) #4 L’Enchanteresse (6-5) was right on the winning par for this in turf route place finish last time. Surface switching special weight dropper dons the hood and should be forwardly placed for quality connections. Does not meet much. #1 This Time Baby (4-1) continues to slowly improve, and she split the field in a local route last time. Rail post strong at this distance, and I would not be surprised if she was aggressively handled in this spot.
