Santa Anita Recap – Jan 31st

Capt. Sparrow ($8.40) overcame a troubled start to tag his four foes in the six furlong opener on Sunday. Joel Rosario booted home the Jack Carava trainee. Spot The Diplomat finished a disappointing 3rd as the fav, and he was claimed by Jeff Mullins.

Good Measure took all the action in the 2nd, but he got caught up in a speed duel and settled for the place behind Land of the Giants ($9.20). Gomez rode the winner for Todd Pletcher.

Poker Dave ($24) went last to first in the 3rd for Bejarano/Truman.

A flat mile on the turf to kick off the pick six, and overseas transplant My Aunt Fanny ($18) closed furiously for the win under Gomez. Sandy Shulman saddled the upset winner.

My contenders ran 1-2-3 in the 5th with Devine Actress ($8.60) proving best under Victor Espinoza. David Hofmans saddled the versatile sort.

Turf win machine Yodelen Dan ($5.40) was clearly best in the grassy 6th for Tyler Baze/Jeff Mullins.

Still in the chase for five after Manhattan Beach ($9.20) rallied for the score under Gomez. Mike Mitchell was the winning conditioner. Patient types definitely best on Pro-Ride today.

Gabby’s Golden Gal ($25.20) sat the right outside stalking trip in a nice tally over my top Proviso in the Grade 1 Santa Monica Handicap. Martin Garcia booted home the Baffert trainee. I thought she was one race away from topping out. Free Flying Soul did all of the inside pace dirty work over a track that wasn’t favoring early speed. Seven panels is not her best distance, buts he sure loves this oval.

Another off the pace type in the finale as Moonskipper ($9.60) rallied for the win under Espinoza. Paddy Gallagher saddled the winner. No perfect tickets today, so Wednesday’s pool gets a $126,946 jump start!
